Taking the GRE Online: Tools for Success

The Graduate Record Exam, or GRE, is a graduate admissions test administered around the world for entrance to many graduate and business schools in the United States as well as other countries. Although the GRE can be taken in traditional pen and paper format, the test and many supporting services and materials are available online to users worldwide.

The online version of the GRE is available year-round in most areas, and takes an average of 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete. While the paper-format GRE has only three parts – analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning – the computer-based test includes two additional sections: a research section and an unidentified unscored section that may appear in any order after the analytical writing section.

The online version of the GRE offers test-takers more options for improving their performance than the linear paper format. The online test offers test-takers opportunities to skip questions and return later, and change and edit answers. This version also includes preview and review capabilities, and an on-screen calculator for use in the Qualitative Reasoning section.

In addition to the general version, the GRE includes subject tests, which are not required for admission to all schools. Subjects tested can include Psychology, Math, Chemistry, Literature and other typical areas of study. Subject tests are not available in the online version of the test; they can only be taken in paper format.

In addition to the test itself, GRE online resources include practice tests, tutorials and a wide variety of test preparation packages and how-to guides for passing the test. Since GRE scores play such an important role in the admission process, these tutorials and lesson packages provide important services, helping students to maximize their chances for high score.

The GRE Online is available on most areas of the world and is accepted by schools around the world. In its paperless form, it offers students in many places and circumstances an opportunity to take the test at their convenience. The online version of the GRE works with students’ own test0taking strategies and styles, and allows them the flexibility to edit and revise answers – tools
